How many treatments are needed?
Most patients require between 1 and 3 treatments with the majority needing a single treatment. Treatments can be repeated at 4-6 week intervals.
How long does the procedure take?
This depends on the number of lesions being treated. It is helpful to have a consultation to determine the time and cost of the procedure.
When can I resume normal activities?
There is very little down time required for this procedure. We do ask that you refrain form vigorous activities for 24 hour after the procedure. We also ask that you avoid direct sunlight, but covering with an SPF 30 Sun Block is acceptable. If the lesions are of larger diameter or extensive, we may ask you to apply some direct pressure or wear a support stocking for 24 to 48 hours, but this is usually not necessary.
What can I expect in the weeks following the procedure?
Some bruising and discoloration can occur, but the body will slowly reabsorb this, as it does any bruises, over the next several weeks.
Are the results permanent?
The results are permanent; however, new vessels can form in the same areas under the same influences that caused them to form in the first place. These are also treatable. Many patients opt to do yearly touchups in the winter.
How does this type of treatment compare to the vascular treatments available?
For small lesions and veins an option is sclerotherpy in which a very concentrated salt solution is injected into every vein which causes the vein to collapse upon itself and hopefully disappear. The procedure is quite painful, time consuming and costly. Most patients require multiple treatments and the results are variable. Blistering, ulcerations and discoloration are a common complication. The larger the vein the more difficult it is
to treat. |
